I was extremely honored to receive the Breeders’ Cup’s 2024 Bill Leggett Award for Outstanding Feature Writing on Oct. 29 at the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters’ annual dinner at Del Mar.
The winning piece was my feature on the 48-hour span between the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and the Fasig-Tipton November sale for the mighty Moira and her connections, trainer Kevin Attard and assistant Korina McLean, as they hit a professional high, then said goodbye at the fall of the hammer.
My favorite stories to write are the ones that take years to tell, and this one started at the 2022 Queen’s Plate when I watched the unruly filly power down the Woodbine stretch to a historic victory. Everyone came a long way from then to now.
I’m so grateful to Kevin Attard and Korina McLean for being so generous with their time and emotions on what was not at all an easy sale day. Their bond with the horse was incredible, and it was an honor to be a fly on the wall for it.
